Our Mission

At Big Sky Community School, our mission is to nurture academic excellence while inspiring students to explore their passions, connect deeply with the community, and learn from the natural world around them. We empower every student to grow with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

Welcome to Big Sky Community School

ABOUT BIG SKY COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Big Sky Community School, a nonprofit K–12 school, serves students and families in Big Sky, Montana. We blend academic rigor with real-world experiences, outdoor education, and a focus on individual passions and pursuits. Guided by tenured local educators and strengthened by community partnerships, our education approach helps students grow as curious, capable, and confident learners.

ACADEMICS

At Big Sky Community School, rigorous academics are delivered within a fully in-person school experience. Students in every grade attend school in person each day, supported by local educators. How academic instruction is delivered varies by age, allowing us to provide each student with the right balance of exceptional teaching, individualized support, and meaningful mentorship.

For younger learners in grades K–4, students attend school in person each day, with most instruction led by our local faculty and additional live instruction provided by an experienced online educator. Small, mastery-based groups in literacy and mathematics are organized by readiness rather than age. Afternoons include Spanish, art, and a place-based Inquiry block rooted in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Explore the K-4th curriculum.

Students in grades 5-12 complete their core coursework through our academic partner, Aeon School, taught by Aeon's faculty, while our local faculty work alongside them in person every day as coaches and mentors. Explore the 5-12th curriculum at Aeon School.

The result is an education that is both academically ambitious and deeply personal, giving students access to exceptional instruction while ensuring they are known, supported, and challenged within a close-knit school community.

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Education doesn’t stop when morning classes end. It extends into the mountains, rivers, and the vibrant community that surrounds Big Sky. Afternoons are designed for deeper, hands-on learning experiences. Most days, students engage in project-based coursework, applying their core academics to real-world problems.

On Fridays, with no synchronous classes, we take advantage of our beautiful surroundings to learn outside. Students might explore Yellowstone National Park, work with community partners like Moving Mountains or the Arts Council of Big Sky, or spend the afternoon hiking, skiing, and fishing in Big Sky’s incredible backyard.

In our Pursuits Programming, students take an area of personal interest and explore it through a year-long project. Guided by mentors and community partners, they connect their curiosity to real-world experiences such as shadowing a local vet, developing a creative portfolio, or launching a small venture.

Our experienced local educators are at the heart of Big Sky Community School. They know each student well, providing the instruction, guidance, and mentorship that make learning personal.
