At Big Sky Community School our mission is to nurture academic excellence while inspiring students to explore their passions, connect deeply with the community, and learn from the natural world around them. We empower every student to grow with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

Big Sky Community School, a nonprofit K–12 school, serves students and families in Big Sky, Montana. We blend academic rigor with real-world experiences, outdoor education, and a focus on individual passions and pursuits. Guided by tenured local educators and strengthened by community partnerships, our education approach helps students grow as curious, capable, and confident learners.

At Big Sky Community School, rigorous education is achieved through a hybrid school model that blends online coursework with in-person support. Students in grades 5-12 complete their studies through our academic partners, Aeon School and Pacific Preparatory, while local faculty serve as mentors and guides. For younger learners in K-4, online coursework is complemented by in-person instruction, small group support, and daily guidance from our local faculty to build strong foundations. This approach combines the strengths of premier online academics with the personal connection and accountability of a supportive community school.

Education doesn’t stop when morning classes end. It extends into the mountains, rivers, and the vibrant community that surrounds Big Sky. Afternoons are designed for deeper, hands-on learning experiences. Most days, students engage in project-based coursework, applying their core academics to real-world problems.
On Fridays, with no synchronous classes, we take advantage of our beautiful surroundings to learn outside. Students might explore Yellowstone National Park, work with community partners like Moving Mountains or the Arts Council of Big Sky, or spend the afternoon hiking, skiing, and fishing in Big Sky’s incredible backyard.
In our Pursuits Programming, students take an area of personal interest and explore it through a year-long project. Guided by mentors and community partners, they connect their curiosity to real-world experiences such as shadowing a local vet, developing a creative portfolio, or launching a small venture.

At Big Sky Community School, students experience the advantages of a hybrid school model that combines traditional and online education. Through our online partnerships, students connect with exceptional teachers from around the globe who offer deep subject expertise and academic rigor. Locally, our dedicated faculty provide the daily support, guidance, and mentorship that make learning personal. Head of School, Jeremy Harder, and Assistant Head of School, Julie Edwards, are experienced educators committed to their students’ success. With a passion for education and a wealth of knowledge, they create a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
